No waste disposal at Mont Terri In his authorisation for the excavation of the new gallery, the Government of the République et Canton du Jura has strictly excluded the temporary or final disposal of any waste. The local geological conditions alone, in this folded and tectonically complex region of the Folded Jura, make the site unsuitable for a waste repository. For Switzerland, the programme at Mont Terri complements the geophysical surveys and the deep borehole carried out by Nagra for the region of the Zürcher Weinland. This is the region which has been selected for the demonstration of feasibility of safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste in the Opalinus Clay. This demonstration is required by the Federal Government.
