Opalinus clay
Because it forms a geological barrier, clay lends itself to the long-term storage of radioactive waste in deep geological layers. Clay has three extremely interesting properties: the ability to retain radionuclides on the surface of clay minerals, very low water permeability (no transport of radionuclides by water) and the ability to self-heal cracks by swelling. For the geological storage of CO2, clay is regarded as a watertight cover over the reservoir (porous rock). Find out more.
