Two main research themes
There are two main areas of research within the Mont Terri project. The first is research into deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. In this case, we are talking about Opalinus clay as the host rock. The second area of research is more recent and concerns the geological storage of CO2. In this case, Opalinus clay at Mont Terri serves as an example/analogue of clay rock as the potential caprock. The CO2 will be stored in a reservoir (a porous rock) located beneath a caprock (e.g. clay), which, thanks to its watertight properties, will ensure that the CO2 does not escape from the reservoir.
